Lae is the capital of Morobe Province and is the second-largest city in Papua New Guinea, with an estimated urban population in 2012 of 100,677. It is located at the start of the Highlands Highway, which is the main land transport corridor from the Highlands region to the coast and near the delta of the Markham River. Lae is the largest cargo port of the country and is the industrial city for Papua New Guinea. Lae has a tropical rainforest climate characterized by high temperatures and high precipitation figures. Lae's Nadzab airport is a 30-40 minute drive from town with regular flights to the country's capital Port Moresby and other domestic centres.
